We appreciate the prompt response and diligence of local and federal law enforcement agencies regarding the situation at Eighth Street Middle School today. It was only a matter of minutes between the time that we were made aware of the threat and the time that law enforcement had the student in custody. As a result of their thorough investigation, a second ESMS student was also taken into custody. We remain committed to ensuring a safe and secure environment for all our students and staff. #4theT

Law enforcement received information about a potential threat to Eighth Street Middle School that resulted in a student being taken into custody. We are unaware of any further threat to students or staff in connection with this incident. We appreciate the partnership with law enforcement and their swift response to this situation. As is the case for systems across the state and country, Tift County Schools continues to receive an increase in social media driven threats of violence. These will be investigated and handled accordingly by school officials and local law enforcement.
Please talk with your children about appropriate and inappropriate ways to express their feelings, the seriousness of making threats, and the potential consequences of their statements. Please ensure your students know who to talk to if they learn of a threat.
The ANONYMOUS ALERTS tip line is accessible from any page on our website. Students or parents can submit information related to any suspicious activity. Alerts are monitored by school administrators and system security staff and responded to in a timely manner.
